OTHER CRITICAL FINALS INFORMATION

  1. CDFNL Grand Final will take place on Saturday 10th September 2022 at Central Reserve, Colac;
  2. GDFL Grand Final is on Saturday 10th September 2022, at St. Albans. The push-back of the GFNL Finals Series by one week, ensures that GDFL & GFNL leagues don’t share the same Grand Final date;
  3. To enable the push back in the GFNL finals series, the implementation of a bye/split round is under way for the weekend of Saturday 20th August 2022. Clubs will communicate and coordinate with their opposing club to ensure certain games can be scheduled as a ‘Round 19’ fixture. This will ensure no club/team has two weeks off in a row, leading into the Finals Series.

AFL Barwon is looking forward to the competitive, exciting and memorable Finals Series across all four leagues and thanks all community members, for their active participation and support of the 2022 seasons.

Anglesea vs Modewarre

Modewarre are starting to get competitive at the right time. They have been on a roll for the last few weeks with more than convincing victories, the latest Anglesea by 33 points.

After the bye, the Warriors will face a rejuvenated Newcomb, who are currently enjoying their football. Modewarre does not want to underestimate this wildcard. The Kangas will hop on to meet Geelong Amateur at Queens Park.

Best

Anglesea: J. Harrison, D. Midolo, M. Simpson, J. Moverley, R. Williams, S. Leeds

Modewarre: C. Farrell, M. Kasparian, O. Butler, J. Ollis, J. O'hanlon, L. Warburton

Goals

Anglesea: 3 R. Williams, 2 L. Holland, L. Beers, L. Cruickshank, J. Keras, M. Mauderer, J. Moverley

Final Score

Anglesea: 10.9 (69)

Modewarre: 14.18 (102)

Drysdale vs Barwon Heads

It seems all that Barwon Heads managed to do in the first term was make Drysdale angry. After keeping the Hawks to one goal in the opening quarter, Drysdale would go on to kick nine majors in the second term. From there it was a typical Drysdale game.

Next Saturday, it’s the ‘big one’ before finals: Torquay vs Drysdale. The last time it was the Hawks with an emphatic victory over the Tigers, but another win could set up mental demons for the future. Definitely, one to watch. Barwon Heads returns to Howard Harmer Oval, Queenscliff will be their next match.

Best

Drysdale: N. Egan, M. Hebbard, B. Fennell, J. Preece, T. Nofi, J. Breust

Barwon Heads: O. Wiltshire, L. Mitchell, S. Lyle, D. Graham, M. Beckwith, M. Philp

Final Score

Drysdale: 18.12 (120)

Barwon Heads: 6.8 (44)

Newcomb vs Queenscliff

This resurgence from Power has been relieving for Newcomb fans. It was not an easy win over Queenscliff who were in reach of stealing the win, but Power hung on. A superb effort by Jack Duke with four majors, he proved to be the difference up forward.

Newcomb looks to Modewarre next. The Power will have the home-ground advantage but the Warriors have been consistent in their wins for weeks. If they somehow topple Modewarre, finals will be within their reach. Queenscliff will want a better start to next week against Barwon Heads. Unfortunately, for the Coutas, the Seagulls have just suffered a big loss and they will be seeking redemption.

Best

Newcomb: R. Hollins, B. Cullinan, J. Duke, R. Jackman, M. Andrews, F. Anscombe

Queenscliff: B. Anwyl, Z. Henderson, C. Whitley, C. Durran, J. McIvor-Clark, I. McCabe

Goals

Newcomb: 4 J. Duke, 2 R. Hollins, 2 E. Taylor, B. Cullinan, C. Ogle, B. Ritchie, J. Walker

Queenscliff: 2 I. McCabe, A. Davie, B. Dawson, T. Dickinson, J. Hedley, L. Kidd, C. Whitley, D. Whitley

Final Score

Newcomb: 12.9 (81)

Queenscliff: 9.16 (70)

Portarlington vs Geelong Amateur

Geelong needed a big win and they delivered as expected. Kristian Bucovaz was the tip of the spear for the Ammos. A monstrous eight-goal haul, saw Bucovaz leave the field a happy man. As were the rest of his teammates.

The Ammos' next match is against Anglesea. They will want a repeat performance from last weekend as finals contenders are itching to get that fifth spot. Portarlington will face Ocean Grove

Best

Portarlington: L. Hart, T. Benham, M. Ruiter, J. Rose, N. Cini, J. Muscat

Geelong Amateur: S. Darley, K. Bucovaz, S. Bain, S. Alesios, J. Lee, T. Stephen

Goals

Geelong Amateur: 8 K. Bucovaz, 3 S. Darley, 3 M. Hungerford, 2 B. Barnett, 2 D. McNeel, S. Bain, E. Farley, T. Stephen, M. Thacker

Final Score

Portarlington: 3.5 (23)

Geelong Amateur: 22.21 (153)

Torquay vs Ocean Grove

It was a powerful performance by Torquay. Sheldon Ham had seven majors with Ben Raidme right behind him with six. They were no doubt sending a message to Drysdale.

This upcoming match means everything. If the Tigers win, they kill those mental demons before finals time. If they lose, Drysdale maintains that image of invincibility. Ocean Grove will turn their attention to Portarlington.

Best

Torquay: S. Ham, B. Henderson, S. Caruso, B. Raidme, C. Currie, P. McMahon

Ocean Grove: F. Keck, T. Chalkley, E. Dayman, M. Sutton, H. Pearce, R. Hobbs

Goals

Torquay: 7 S. Ham, 6 B. Raidme, 3 C. Currie, 3 P. McMahon, 3 C. Page, 2 S. Caruso, 2 C. Heard, J. Ireland

BFL Wash Up Round 12

Barwon Heads vs Torquay

A fight back in the second term saw Barwon Heads take the lead, from there, the real test began. Torquay struck back with five unanswered majors in the third quarter. From there, the Tigers moved on to a convincing 30-point victory.

The Seagulls are still that step below the elite talent. They will get their chance again in their next match against Drysdale. But they will need to produce a four-quarter effort if they are to down the ladder leaders. Torquay will face Ocean Grove as the Tigers return to their den.

Final Score

Barwon Heads: 9.12 (66)

Torquay: 14.12 (96)

Geelong Amateur vs Drysdale

Another supreme victory by Drysdale. Mat Hebbard was outstanding last Saturday with an eight-goal performance.  You can’t give the Hawks an inch, they must be matched in every term. Despite their undefeated streak, they have shown that they can be shaken.

The last time Drysdale met Barwon Heads in the first round, the Seagulls lost by very little. Perhaps this weekend may serve as a challenge for the mighty Hawks. As for Geelong Amateur, they will want a big win against Portarlington, they are just hanging onto their current fifth spot.

Best

Geelong Amateur: S. Darley, J. Jans, C. Lewis, L. Devine, J. Edwards, J. Lee

Drysdale: C. Lynch, M. Hebbard, N. Egan, J. Breust, M. Mcguire, J. Jenkins

Final Score

Geelong Amateur: 10.10 (70)

Drysdale: 20.13 (133)

Newcomb vs Portarlington

The Power has been good in recent weeks. Put wins and losses aside, you can see when a team is competing despite their circumstances. The win was well deserved, Andrew Steel finishing with five majors with Jack Duke just behind him with four.

Newcomb face an intriguing match-up this weekend when they meet the Coutas. The Power will play on home soil, but Queenscliff will want to bounce back after a poor defeat from Modewarre. The Demons will face Geelong Amateur.

Best

Newcomb: M. Walson, M. Andrews, B. Ritchie, K. Bourke, B. Rees, T. Courtney

Portarlington: W. Foott, I. Holroyd, M. Farrell, S. Walton, T. Benham, R. Salvador

Portarlington: 2.2 (14)

Ocean Grove vs Anglesea

Ocean Grove will be bitter on that defeat. They came out strong and played solid football for three quarters, but not four. The Kangas just hopped over the line with the help of Ben Jaska finishing his day with a bag.

Anglesea will return home this weekend when they face Modewarre who are coming off a solid win. Ocean Grove will find it tough to beat Torquay on their home ground.

Best

Ocean Grove: T. Chalkley, J. Horton, R. Hobbs, M. Taylor, M. Sutton, T. Ruck

Anglesea: L. Beers, B. Jaska, R. Williams, M. Mauderer, J. Moverley, T. Leeds

Final Score

Ocean Grove: 16.8 (104)

Anglesea: 17.8 (110)

Queenscliff vs Modewarre

After the Barwon Heads loss, Modewarre has been on a role lately. Seven goals to Tom Hornsey, the man proved to be unstoppable. Connor Joseph was no slouch either with six majors for his tally.

The Coutas seem to be a little off in recent weeks, they desperately need the win against Newcomb at PlasterCom Oval but Power seem to be ready to fight.  The Warriors will take on Anglesea, and you could imagine Modewarre will want to put the foot down early.

Best

Queenscliff: C. Whitley, L. Kidd, C. Durran, A. Hogan, D. Gibbs, I. McCabe

Modewarre: T. Hornsey, C. Joseph, J. Finch, O. Butler, J. Beardsell, T. Anderson
