“Versatile, agile and doggedly determined” - South Barwon star reaches A Grade milestone

As finals excitement has well and truly set in over the Barwon region, this coming Sunday is an extraordinarily special day for one player in particular.

South Barwon senior netballer Olivia Cameron is playing her 300th A Grade netball game. This is an incredible achievement and a product of years of hard work and commitment to the game.

Former player and coach Ainsley Corrigan highlights Olivia’s unique combination of skills and attributes that have led her to this milestone.

“Olivia would have to be one of the most versatile, consistent and creative players to have played A Grade netball. That combined with her fierce competitiveness has made her unstoppable over many years,” expressed Corrigan.

Sunday marks the most recent of many successful career milestones for Olivia.

Starting at South Barwon Football Netball Club in 2002 for the Under 13s, Olivia received the League Best and Fairest Award and her team finished undefeated, taking out the top spot in the Grand Final that year.

In 2004, Olivia played her first senior netball game for B Grade and by 2005, Olivia was not only playing for the Under 17s but made her A Grade debut that same year. Both teams won the Grand Final in both 2005 and 2006.

Olivia’s A Grade contributions continued as she remained a key player in every Grand Final from 2007 to 2016, with only 5 of these Grand Finals ending in a loss.

Outside of her achievements at South Barwon, Olivia represented her school in the Victorian Netball, and Basketball, Championships at both junior and senior levels.

Olivia was selected as a Rep player for the Geelong Football Netball League and played for the Geelong Cougars in the Victorian Netball League.

More recently, Olivia stepped away from the court to take time to bring her beautiful daughter Maggie into the world.

Olivia is known for being a great role model to those around her and is a wonderful club person whose contributions are felt on and off the court.

Current teammates Caitlin Hoiles and Tyra Fallon hail Olivia as a true inspiration who lends herself completely to the game and is generous in sharing her passion and knowledge with others.

“She is one of the most talented players that I have had the privilege to watch and play alongside. She is super versatile and a loyal club player,” said Hoiles.

“Liv is such a fierce, talented and knowledgeable player and I’m so grateful to be able to learn off and play alongside someone like Liv. She is an amazing leader with a great passion for the game. She is an inspiration and role model to all and is also always up for a laugh and a bit of fun!” told Fallon.

South Barwon’s A Grade is up against St Joseph’s in this Sunday’s GNFL Semi-Final at West Oval Reserve.

As told by Stacey Dodds, former coach and teammate, Olivia’s extensive finals experience along with her strong physicality and adaptability on the court will be sure to be an asset for South Barwon on Sunday.

“[Olivia is] one of the most determined players I have had the privilege of playing alongside and coaching. Olivia puts her body on the line every week and would do anything for her teammates. It doesn’t surprise me that she’s playing her 300th A Grade game this week as she is also a very talented player that can slot into almost any position according to where her team needs her,” stated Dodds.

Ruby Watson, another former teammate, praises Olivia’s on-court intelligence.

“Olivia Cameron is one of the smartest netballers I’ve ever played with. She somehow knows what you’re going to do, even before you know what you’re going to do,” said Watson.

Olivia’s former coach Renee Lane also acknowledges Olivia’s inner determination and pure talent.

“Versatile, agile and doggedly determined. A Legend of the mighty Swans and a pleasure to play alongside and coach,” stated Lane.

Reaching 300 A Grade games is an outstanding milestone that deserves to be widely celebrated. Congratulations Olivia on a fantastic achievement!

AFL Barwon Netball Representative Teams for 2025 Announced

AFL Barwon’s Netball Representative Program is gearing up for another exciting year, with the 2025 season shaping up to be one of the most competitive yet. Over 270 athletes from across the two leagues trialed for a spot in the program, showcasing the depth of talent in the region.

The selection process was particularly competitive in the 15 & Under age group, with more than 60 players vying for a place in both leagues.

After careful consideration, 10 representative teams have been finalized, comprising five teams from each league.

The squads can be found below:

Geelong Football Netball League

Bellarine Football Netball League

This year marks a significant milestone for the program, with the introduction of 13 & Under Development teams for the first time. This addition highlights AFL Barwon’s commitment to nurturing emerging talent and providing more opportunities for young athletes to develop their skills in a competitive environment.

The Championship Teams will showcase their talent at the prestigious Barwon Junior Netball Championships, where they will compete against other league and association representative teams.

Meanwhile, the Development Teams will participate in the Geelong Central Netball Association’s Monday Night Junior Competition, an excellent platform for players to hone their skills in a structured and challenging environment.

Both Championship and Development teams will come together to represent their leagues at Netball Victoria’s Association Championships. This tournament will provide an opportunity for players to test themselves against some of the best young talent in the state, with the chance to progress to the state finals.

The program’s coaching lineup will be revealed in the new year, with anticipation already building around the experienced and dedicated mentors who will guide these talented athletes.

AFL Barwon remains committed to providing a pathway for aspiring netballers and providing opportunities for players to develop their skills at a high level.

AFL Barwon Supports Netball Infrastructure Development

AFL Barwon is in unanimous support of the statement made by City of Greater Geelong Mayor Trent Sullivan on Friday December 8th that there is a clear need to urgently progress the development of additional netball infrastructure in the Region.

The AFL Barwon Strategic Plan outlines a key strategic pillar that has a focus to “strengthen, ignite and support participation opportunities across every aspect of football and netball, to ensure all competitions thrive and have inequitable opportunities addressed”.

Netball participation numbers over the past 10 years has increased from 3100 to over 5700 participants playing in all AFL Barwon competitions. The past 12 months alone has incurred a rise of 9.4% across all AFL Barwon competitions. Team numbers in all competitions has risen from 335 in 2013, to 705 in 2023. There has been a severe lack of infrastructure development or improvements over this time to support the growth in participation. The lack of facility support, and developments means some teams are on a training rotation roster.

This growth in our competition could have been significantly higher with some team entries being denied due to being at facility capacity. AFL Barwon has also not had the opportunity to expand on diversifying competitions offerings. The capacity issues also led to All Abilities competitions being administered outside of AFL Barwon governance.

The Barwon region has recorded increases in Netball participation each year since the Covid-19 pandemic. This is not only due to the competitions being provided, but also assisted by the strong growth corridors in the region. The population increase in the Greater Geelong region is projected to rise by over 63,000 by 2033, and by around 114,000 people in 2041. If our netball competitions increase by even 1% of the projected population growth over the next 10 years, we will have a projected increase of approximately 630 participants and roughly 63 teams.

The pathway and elite netball opportunities in the Barwon region are further significantly hampered with the lack of infrastructure development. The obvious lack of Stadia and surrounding infrastructure to support or showcase elite Netball such the Geelong Netball Club programs. This has also led to our own representative netball programs having no adequate facilities to train. The lack of appropriate Stadium has put our region well behind other Regional Victoria towns. Ballarat and Bendigo both have Indoor Stadiums with capacities of 3000 and 4000 respectively. There is a clear desire and requirement for Geelong to have a Stadium that matches or exceeds the capacity of these other regions considering the population size and projected growth.

The future of Netball in our community is being severely hampered by the lack of facility infrastructure growth to meet the exponential growth in the Barwon Region

We look forward to supporting any progressive conversations surrounding Netball infrastructure enhancements in the future to benefit our community.
