Modewarre champion reaches 300 matches
Born and bred in Moriac, Modewarre champion Josh Finch first began playing for the club when he was just seven years old. He went on to play senior football at the premature age of 17 and was made vice-captain of the team 5 years later, where in which he had an eight-year reign.
Despite plans to make the jump to the victorious South Barwon in 2014 during a time when Modewarre were looking to finish low on the ladder, Finch is forever grateful that his loyalty won when a friend encouraged him not to “jump on a train that is already full steam ahead” and to stay at Modewarre and really make a difference. Finch and his team went on to win a premiership only a few years later. Now aged 36, he has remained a one-club player for his entire football career, celebrating his 300th game this weekend.
Former long-serving Modewarre Club President Michael Fitzgerald describes Finch as a player that is “a true student of the game” and has always been driven to improve. Explaining that he prepares, plays, and recovers more professionally than any country league player that he has come across, Fitzgerald says that there has “never been a lightbulb moment that transformed Josh, he just simply has worked tirelessly to better himself”.
Finch has not only been a captain and a coach during his time at Modewarre but has also always shown interest in the junior selection of the club, including the last 3 years as Auskick coach. To go with his four Les Ash Medal and nine club Best and Fairest awards, Finch has represented Vic Country three times and was part of the BFNL Interleague program on seven occasions. Fitzgerald believes that Finch’s glowing record “speaks for itself, he is simply the best. He has been the most loyal player of not only Modewarre, but of the league in its history.” Solidifying himself as arguably one of the best players to have competed in the BFNL, Finch was also ranked fourth in the 2021 Geelong Advertiser’s “Best 50 Players in the 50 Years of the Bellarine FNL”.
After winning the 2016 Les Ash Medal, Finch acknowledged the achievement as something he will “look back on once his footy career is finished”. He expressed that “there are so many great players in this competition [the BFNL]” and that some of them will never even win an Ash Medal. This emphasises Finch’s understanding of the significance of these awards when it comes to individual success as a community footballer.
Finch’s long-time friend and teammate, John Meesen, provided AFL Barwon with an insight into Finch’s early days as a Bellarine footballer. Meesen and Finch played all their junior football together but went their separate ways during senior football, where Meesen spent time in the AFL system. When discussing Finch’s early career, Meesen noted that his rise as a Bellarine FNL star only started in his late teens. Explaining that “he wasn’t an elite junior or anything”, Meesen marked Finch's turning point as when he “decided to get super fit around 17-18" and “really began excelling”. This method of hard work combined with desire that Finch began to develop in his late teens became a trademark of his career success. Meesen believes that “what separates him is that desire to get the very best of himself” and that Finch would be the “first to say he got where he is now through hard work and determination rather than God-given talent”.
Meesen ultimately coached Modewarre to Senior Football success when they won the 2018 Bellarine FNL Premiership. Despite always remaining incredibly humble, Meesen expressed that team success has always remained at the forefront for Finch and that the achievement in 2018 was “pretty special for everyone, but none more than him”.
Although Finch’s success is attributed to his immense hard work determination, it also couldn’t have been done without the unwavering support of his children and wife Emma, who also happens to be a talented netballer at Modewarre that Finch met in his teens. The success of the Finch family at Modewarre is something that may not ever be seen again in community sport and is widely admired by the Bellarine FNL community.

MRP Findings August 15
Geelong West Giants v St Albans
At the request of the officiating umpires, the MRP have reviewed vision of an incident that occurred during the 4th quarter of the Geelong West Giants v St Albans Senior match 13th August 2022 involving a potentially dangerous tackle by Emmanuel Ajang #58 Geelong West Giants on Matthew Graham #13 St Albans.
It was deemed the tackle was not reportable and no charge was laid.
Lara v St Joseph’s
At the request of the officiating umpire, the MRP reviewed vision of a melee that occurred during the 3rd quarter of the Lara v St Joseph’s Senior match 13th August 2022.
No reportable incidents were identified and the melee did not warrant any further action.
No charge was laid.
Modewarre v Geelong Amateur
At the request of the officiating umpire, the MRP reviewed vision of an incident that occurred in the 2nd quarter of the Modewarre v Geelong Amateur Senior Elimination Final 14th August 2022 involving a late bump by Jack Scarlett #17 Geelong Amateur on Callan Farrell #15 Modewarre. It was deemed that the down the field free kick that was paid was the appropriate action in this instance.
No charge was laid.
Thomson v Inverleigh
At the request of the officiating umpire, the MRP reviewed vision of an incident that occurred during the 4th quarter of the Thomson v Inverleigh Senior match 13th August 2022 involving an alleged high bump by Ryan Garrard #17 Inverleigh on Jackson Sheedy #13 Thomson. It was deemed that the bump was fair with contact to Sheedy made when falling back against another opponent caused his injury.
No charge was laid.
Bell Post Hill v Geelong West Giants
At the request of the officiating umpire, the MRP reviewed vision of an incident that occurred in the 2nd quarter of the Bell Post Hill v Geelong West Giants Senior match 13th August 2022.
It was deemed that the bump applied by William Ford #17 Bell Post Hill on Michael Leamer #6 Geelong West Giants warranted a free kick and 50 metre penalty, but was not reportable.
No charge was laid.
The MRP also reviewed vision of an incident from the 4th quarter of the Bell Post Hill v Geelong West Giants Senior match 13th August 2022 where Zane Jones #20 Bell Post Hill was reported for rough conduct on Samuel Edwards #18 Geelong West Giants. The MRP supported the report and felt that a reprimand was an appropriate sanction to be offered in this instance.
Both clubs involved have until 10.00am Tuesday 16th August to request the matter be heard at Tribunal, or the sanction will apply as offered.

Bell Park v Grovedale
At the request of the officiating umpires, the MRP have reviewed vision of an incident that occurred during the 4th quarter of the Bell Park v Grovedale Senior match involving a potential dangerous tackle by Jack Hall #17 Bell Park on jack Tute #21 Grovedale.
It was deemed the tackle was not reportable and no charge was laid.
Lara v Colac
At the request of the officiating umpires, the MRP reviewed vision of a potential dangerous tackle by Bailey Harvey #33 Lara on Cooper Stephens #21 Colac that occurred in the 4th quarter of the Lara v Colac Senior match 6th August 2022.
It was deemed that the tackle warranted a free kick should have been paid for in the back, but was not reportable.
No charge was laid.
St Mary’s v Newtown & Chilwell
At the request of St Mary’s FNC, the MRP reviewed vision of an incident that occurred involving Liam Fiore #13 Newtown & Chilwell and Harrison Kol #8 St Mary’s, in the 2nd quarter of the St Mary’s v Newtown & Chilwell Senior match on 7th August 2022.
It was deemed that Liam Fiore made high contact on Harrison Kol in a manner that constituted a reportable offence for a careless strike.
He has been offered a one match set penalty.
Both clubs involved have until 10.00am Tuesday 9th August to request the matter be heard at Tribunal, or the sanction will apply as offered.
No vision was available of a melee that allegedly occurred at the end of the 3rd quarter. No charges were laid.
There was also no vision of an incident where Matthew McMahon #9 Newtown & Chilwell was reported by the officiating umpire for carelessly striking Nick Nott #15 St Mary’s.
A one match set penalty was offered by the officiating umpire and has been accepted by Newtown & Chilwell.
Anakie v Werribee Centrals
At the request of the Werribee Centrals FNC, the MRP reviewed vision of an incident in the 3rd quarter of the Anakie v Werribee Centrals Senior match 6th August 2022 where it was alleged that Billy Goodwin #13 Anakie kicked Chad Buck #16 Werribee Centrals.
It was deemed that #13 Anakie was observed to kick his opponent #16 Werribee Centrals in a manner deemed to be intentional and reportable.
Billy Goodwin has been offered a 4 match set penalty for this offence.
Both clubs involved have until 10.00am Tuesday 9th August to request the matter be heard at Tribunal, or the sanction will apply as offered.
At the request of the officiating umpires the MRP reviewed vision of an incident in the 3rd quarter of the Anakie v Werribee Centrals Senior match 6th August 2022 where Mark Pope #6 Anakie allegedly received contact to the face. The vision was inconclusive and no charge was identified.
At the request of the officiating umpires, the MRP also reviewed vision of ongoing melees in the 3rd quarter of the Anakie v Werribee Centrals Senior match 6th August 2022 that involved a number of players from both sides.
Both clubs have been fined a total of $650 for their involvement, $150 of which has been suspended until the end of 2023 season.
North Shore v St Albans
The MRP reviewed vision of an incident that occurred in the 2nd quarter of the North Shore v St Albans Senior match 6th August 2022, where Harry Purcell #9 North Shore was reported by the officiating umpire for Charging Harrison Howarth #5 St Albans.
The MRP supported the charge and in consultation with the reporting umpire have offered a one match set penalty in this instance.
There was no available vision of an incident where Herschelle Carr $30 North Shore was reported by the officiating umpire in the 3rd quarter of the North Shore v St Albans Senior match 6th August 2022 for allegedly kicking Brent Vermeulen #11 St Albans.
In consultation with the reporting umpire and available evidence, the MRP have offered a 2 match set penalty in this instance.
Both clubs involved have until 10.00am Tuesday 9th August to request either matter be heard at Tribunal, or the sanctions will apply as offered.
Geelong West Giants v Belmont Lions
At the request of Geelong West Giants, the MRP reviewed vision of two incidents that occurred in the 3rd quarter of the Geelong West Giants v Belmont Lions Senior Match 6th August 2022.
It was deemed that the incident involving Brent Jacques #21 Belmont Lions and Michael Leamer #6 Geelong West Giants was not reportable, but worthy of a free kick.
No charge was laid
It was deemed that the incident involving Brent Jacques #21 Belmont Lions and Sam Edwards #18 Geelong West Giants was regarded as unnecessary high contact and reportable for rough conduct.
A 2 match set penalty has been offered in this instance.
Both clubs involved have until 10.00am Tuesday 9th August to request the matter be heard at Tribunal, or the sanction will apply as offered.
The MRP reviewed vision of an incident that occurred in the 3rd quarter of the Geelong West Giants v Belmont Lions senior match 6th August 2022 where Jed Evans #53 Belmont Lions was reported by the officiating umpires for rough conduct through a dangerous tackle on Tom Richmond #3 Geelong West Giants.
The MRP have supported the charge, Belmont Lions have advised that they wish to challenge the 2 match set penalty at tribunal. This will be heard Tuesday 9th August at Buckley’s (Time TBA)
Modewarre v Drysdale
The MRP reviewed vision of an incident that occurred in the 4th quarter of the Modewarre v Drysdale Senior Match 6th August 2022, where Tevan Nofi was reported by the officiating umpire for rough conduct on Oliver Butler #5 Modewarre.
The MRP have supported the charge and a 2 match set penalty has been offered.
Both clubs involved have until 10.00am Tuesday 9th August to request the matter be heard at Tribunal, or the sanction will apply as offered.
Queenscliff v Torquay
At the request of the officiating umpires, the MRP reviewed vision of an incident that occurred in the 3rd quarter of the Queenscliff v Torquay Senior Match 6th August 2022 involving Angus Naylor #12 Queenscliff making high contact with Lucas Anderson #1 Torquay.
It was deemed that Angus Naylor made high contact to the face of Lucas Anderson in a manner that was reportable for carelessly striking.
The MRP have issued a reprimand for the offence in this instance.
Both clubs involved have until 10.00am Tuesday 9th August to request the matter be heard at Tribunal, or the sanction will apply as offered.

Anakie v Thomson
At the request of Anakie FNC, the MRP viewed vision of an incident that occurred in the first quarter of the Anakie v Thomson Senior match on Saturday 9th July 2022.
The MRP deemed that Jackson Macleod #2 Thomson chose to bump making high contact with Nick Kalbarczyk #21 Anakie.
Jackson Macleod was reported for engaging in rough conduct and has been offered a one match set penalty.
Newcomb v Modewarre
At the request of Modewarre FNC, the MRP viewed vision of an incident that occurred in the 2nd quarter of the Newcomb v Modewarre Senior match on Saturday 9th July 2022.
The MRP deemed that the incident involving Corey Ogle #23 Newcomb and Josh Finch #18 Modewarre was not reportable, and the free kick & 50 metre penalty was appropriate in the circumstances.
No charge was laid.

St Joseph’s v North Shore
James Hickey #27 St Joseph’s was reported by the officiating umpires for engaging in rough conduct with what was alleged to be a dangerous tackle on Will Milsome #35 North Shore in the 2nd quarter of the St Joseph’s v North Shore Senior match on Saturday 9th July 2022.
The MRP viewed the incident and have supported the action as being reportable, the 2 match set penalty as offered is deemed appropriate.
Corio v Bannockburn
Kieran Fulton #23 Bannockburn was reported by the officiating umpire for engaging in rough conduct with what was alleged to be a dangerous tackle on Blake Ash #20 Corio in the 3rd quarter of the Corio v Bannockburn Senior match on Saturday 9th July 2022.
The MRP viewed the incident and have supported the action as being reportable, but based on the vision and in consultation with the reporting umpires have amended the set penalty offered to one match.
Where Set Penalties have been offered, both clubs involved have until 10.00am Tuesday 12th July to request the matter be heard at Tribunal, or the Set Penalty will apply as offered.
