Final Charge: GFNL Finals Picture Taking Shape

As the home and away season edges toward its conclusion, the Geelong Football Netball League is building towards a blockbuster finish. With finals spots on the line and top contenders jostling for position, every result from here could make or break a campaign. AFL Barwon’s Will Spence breaks down the run home, key clashes, and the clubs with everything still to play for in the race to September.

 

1. St Joseph’s P 12, PTS 44, % 197.66, W 11, L 1

Last Five Games: LWWWW

Run Home: St Mary’s (H) (3), Colac (A) (4), Leopold (H) (7), Lara (A) (12), St Albans (H) (8), Geelong West Giants (H) (9)

St Joseph’s have a reasonable run home, playing four sides outside the top five, giving their week one finals hopes an even better chance.

Three wins at minimum for St Joseph’s should give them a finals bye.

Danger Games: St Mary’s, Colac, Leopold

2. Newtown & Chilwell P 12, PTS 36, % 148.21, W 9, L 3

Run Home: North Shore (A) (11), Grovedale (H) (10), South Barwon (H) (5), St Albans (A) (8), Lara (A) (12), St Mary’s (H) (3)

To the naked eye, Newtown seems to have a reasonable run home, four of their last six games are played against sides outside the top five.

Three or four wins out of their last five games, has them in a good spot for a second chance come September.

Facing four of the top six sides as we stand presents a difficult fixture for St Mary’s.

With only two home games remaining, supporters will be cheering loud and proud in enemy territory.

4. Colac P 11, PTS 32, % 214.35, W 8, L 3

Run Home: St Albans (A) (8), St Joseph’s (H) (1), Lara (A) (12), Bell Park (A) (6), Geelong West Giants (H) (9), South Barwon (A) (5), Grovedale (A) (10)

Momentum has Colac sitting comfortably, wins from four of their last five games support their progress.

The Tigers play three of the top six sides which may create a test, but history is on their side against the other remaining sides, having beaten them all.

Four of their six games are away, which could cause some possible headaches.

5. South Barwon P 11, PTS 28, % 192.78, W 7, L 4

Run Home: Leopold (A) (7), Bell Park (H) (6), Newtown & Chilwell (A) (2), North Shore (H) (11), St Mary’s (A) (3), Colac (H) (4), St Albans (H) (8)

The Swans are in a reign of form they would like to continue.

Although finals could be determined by their own performances, five of their last seven games are against sides sitting seventh or better on the ladder.

The percentage is on their side; however, four or five games will be minimum if the Swans play finals.

6. Bell Park P 11, PTS 28, %168.40, W 7, L 4

Last Five Games: WWLWW

Run Home: Geelong West Giants (A) (9), South Barwon (A) (5), St Mary’s (H) (3), Colac (H) (4), North Shore (A) (11), Grovedale (H) (10), Leopold (H) (7)

Similarly to South Barwon, the Dragons finals fate is in their own hands.

Playing four sides inside the top seven, wins against these clubs could determine the outcome of Bell Park’s September aspirations.

A minimum of four to five games is required to play in finals.

7. Leopold P 11, PTS 24, % 163.73, W 6, L 5

The reigning premiers will need a lot to go their way, although the run home is in their favor playing four sides below them on the ladder.

Wins against sides below them and against Bell Park or South Barwon should sneak them into the five.

8. St Albans P 11, PTS 16, % 104.87, W, 4, L 7

St Alban’s run home has them setting their sights on finishing higher up the ladder.

Playing against five sides below or around them on the ladder, presents optimism for their remaining draw.

9. Geelong West Giants P 11, PTS 16, % 84.15, W 4, L 7

Mathematically the Giants can still play finals, although the likelihood is quite low.

Playing only two sides below them on the ladder for the rest of the season, Geelong West Giants have been given a less than favorable remaining fixture.

10. Grovedale P 11, PTS 8, % 81.47, W 2, L 9

Run Home: Lara (H) (12), Newtown & Chilwell (A) (2), St Albans (A) (8), St Mary’s (H) (3), Leopold (H) (7), Bell Park (A) (6), Colac (H) (4)

A difficult run home for Grovedale, playing two sides below them on the ladder, with remaining clubs either cemented in finals or vying for a finals spot.

If the Tigers can finish the season with six to seven wins, there’ll be plenty to like for the future.

11. North Shore P 11, PTS 4, % 11.81, W 1, L 10

North Shore plays one club below them on the ladder in round 18 against Lara, with clubs fighting for finals spots, the Seagulls will have some difficult matches.

Playing the top four sides to finish their season, Lara has been given a less than favorable fixture to finish the season.

The Cats will have round 18 penciled in.

With just a handful of rounds remaining, the Bellarine Football Netball League is primed for a thrilling finish. From top-of-the-table battles to fierce fights for a finals berth, every match carries weight as clubs eye September action. Geelong Amateurs are in a purple patch of form looking to continue their winning ways.

Playing against three sides outside the top seven, Ammos have a great chance to finish on top of the ladder.

A tough test to finish the season, playing three sides inside the top five to finish the season.

The Tigers will need to win four games to ensure a top three spot for finals.

The Hawks top three chances will come down to their ability to win games against sides around them on the ladder.

Facing Geelong Amateurs, Torquay and Barwon Heads will pose a threat.

Drysdale will most likely need three or four wins for a top three spot.

Queenscliff has rode a wave of confidence throughout the middle part of the season.

However, loses to finals contenders, Geelong Amateurs and Drysdale has put a hold to their run of form.

Three wins should be enough to play finals; however they would most likely need four or five wins to finish in the top three.

Playing one side above them on the ladder, finals could be dictated by Barwon Heads performances.

Barwon Heads would like to win every game to finish the season, although three or four wins should be enough for finals if they beat Anglesea and Modewarre.

Anglesea find themselves in a vulnerable position, from pushing towards a top three spot, a five-game losing streak now has the finals chances in question.

The Roos have drawn a favourable fixture to end the season, playing two clubs above them on the ladder.

Wins against Queenscliff and Barwon Heads could be enough to sneak in.

Percentage could play a major role, however.

Find themselves back in the fold, one game outside the top five.

However, a tough draw, playing all but one club above them on the ladder suggests finals will happen if the Warriors beat finals contenders.

Will need to win four games minimum.

Portarlington slow build towards September has been halted win back-to-back losses. Playing sides all above them gives the Dees a less than favourable remaining fixture.

A win against Modewarre and against one of the remaining sides presents optimism for the future.

Victorian Community Football Aligns Under First-Ever Statewide Charter

In a landmark moment for grassroots football in Victoria, the state’s 20 metropolitan and country governing bodies have aligned with AFL Victoria to formally endorse a unified strategic direction for the game’s future.
 
The culmination of more than two years of collaboration, the newly established Victorian Community Football Charter marks the first time the state’s community football bodies have aligned under a shared philosophy: that through strong relationships, clearer governance, and effective structures, Victorian community football can thrive.
 
Developed under the guidance of the Future State Project, the Charter reflects a united commitment to overcoming shared challenges, seizing new opportunities, and building a more sustainable and inclusive game for all Victorians.
 
“Victoria is the largest football community nationally yet, until now, has not shared a strategic direction or collaborated as an industry to ensure the game thrives,” said Greg Madigan, Head of AFL Victoria.
 
“The signing of the Victorian Community Football Charter and the commitment to initial priority projects align all governing bodies and AFL Victoria under one strategic vision, supported by structured processes and shared decision-making.”
 
A Collaborative Vision, Backed by Action
The Charter outlines a broad strategic focus, guiding principles, and seven initial key Priority Projects, all led by representatives across the state's football community. These projects include:

  • Player Pathways
  • Community Umpiring Programs and Environments
  • Community Female Football
  • The continuation and expansion of the CCSP (Club and Competition Sustainability Project)
  • Critical Incident Management
  • Community Football Conduct and Standards
  • A Policy Reference Group

“The CCSP and Policy Reference Group have already proven to be critical components, and under the Charter, they’ve been revised and expanded to help strengthen the game’s foundations,” said Madigan.

“We’ve already seen success, with all governing bodies co-designing and adopting State Affiliate Regulations for club transfers and team establishments earlier this year.”

United in Philosophy, Diverse in Governance
While each metropolitan league and country region remains independent and manages its own governance and constitutional responsibilities, all signatories to the Charter have committed to a broader, evidence-based, industry-wide approach.
 
Lee Hartman, CEO of the Southern Football Netball League, said:
“This Charter represents significant progress. Victorian community football will be far better served when leagues work together, not in isolation.”
 
Jason Reddick, CEO of the VAFA, added:
“Whilst there are many challenges facing community football, our leagues are best placed to maximise the opportunities of growing male and female participation and supporting volunteerism when working collaboratively as an industry, whilst also encouraging leagues to drive initiatives"
 
Zac Hedin, AFL North East Border Region Manager, reinforced the importance of unity across varying models.
“Simplicity and consistency of process apply in every setting. Clear communication and collaborative decision-making will deliver better outcomes across the board.”
 
CEO of Wetsern Football Netball League David Jennings said:
"The Western Football Netball League is proud to stand alongside our peers in shaping a vibrant future for community football in Victoria. The Charter represents a powerful step forward for grassroots football and this collective approach ensures that every level of the game benefits from a stronger, more inclusive, and sustainable future”.
 
A New Era for Community Football
The Charter is not a one-off achievement but the foundation of an evolving, collective approach to managing and growing community football in Victoria.
 
“AFL Victoria is committed to ongoing coordination, project delivery, and the establishment of new initiatives,” said Madigan.

“We now have a clear path forward — with structure, strategy, and unity underpinning everything we do.”
