BFL Wash Up Round 12

Barwon Heads vs Torquay

A fight back in the second term saw Barwon Heads take the lead, from there, the real test began. Torquay struck back with five unanswered majors in the third quarter. From there, the Tigers moved on to a convincing 30-point victory.

The Seagulls are still that step below the elite talent. They will get their chance again in their next match against Drysdale. But they will need to produce a four-quarter effort if they are to down the ladder leaders. Torquay will face Ocean Grove as the Tigers return to their den.

Best

Barwon Heads: K. Maher, N. Avery, M. Philp, M. Beckwith, K. Treweek, O. Wiltshire

Torquay: M. Hurley, B. Henderson, S. Caruso, M. Croxford, B. Raidme, B. McNamara

Final Score

Barwon Heads: 9.12 (66)

Torquay: 14.12 (96)

Geelong Amateur vs Drysdale

Another supreme victory by Drysdale. Mat Hebbard was outstanding last Saturday with an eight-goal performance.  You can’t give the Hawks an inch, they must be matched in every term. Despite their undefeated streak, they have shown that they can be shaken.

The last time Drysdale met Barwon Heads in the first round, the Seagulls lost by very little. Perhaps this weekend may serve as a challenge for the mighty Hawks. As for Geelong Amateur, they will want a big win against Portarlington, they are just hanging onto their current fifth spot.

Best

Geelong Amateur: S. Darley, J. Jans, C. Lewis, L. Devine, J. Edwards, J. Lee

Drysdale: C. Lynch, M. Hebbard, N. Egan, J. Breust, M. Mcguire, J. Jenkins

Final Score

Geelong Amateur: 10.10 (70)

Drysdale: 20.13 (133)

Newcomb vs Portarlington

The Power has been good in recent weeks. Put wins and losses aside, you can see when a team is competing despite their circumstances. The win was well deserved, Andrew Steel finishing with five majors with Jack Duke just behind him with four.

Newcomb face an intriguing match-up this weekend when they meet the Coutas. The Power will play on home soil, but Queenscliff will want to bounce back after a poor defeat from Modewarre. The Demons will face Geelong Amateur.

Best

Newcomb: M. Walson, M. Andrews, B. Ritchie, K. Bourke, B. Rees, T. Courtney

Portarlington: W. Foott, I. Holroyd, M. Farrell, S. Walton, T. Benham, R. Salvador

Final Score

Newcomb: 15.26 (116)

Portarlington: 2.2 (14)

Ocean Grove vs Anglesea

Ocean Grove will be bitter on that defeat. They came out strong and played solid football for three quarters, but not four. The Kangas just hopped over the line with the help of Ben Jaska finishing his day with a bag.

Anglesea will return home this weekend when they face Modewarre who are coming off a solid win. Ocean Grove will find it tough to beat Torquay on their home ground.

Best

Ocean Grove: T. Chalkley, J. Horton, R. Hobbs, M. Taylor, M. Sutton, T. Ruck

Anglesea: L. Beers, B. Jaska, R. Williams, M. Mauderer, J. Moverley, T. Leeds

Final Score

Ocean Grove: 16.8 (104)

Anglesea: 17.8 (110)

Queenscliff vs Modewarre

After the Barwon Heads loss, Modewarre has been on a role lately. Seven goals to Tom Hornsey, the man proved to be unstoppable. Connor Joseph was no slouch either with six majors for his tally.

The Coutas seem to be a little off in recent weeks, they desperately need the win against Newcomb at PlasterCom Oval but Power seem to be ready to fight.  The Warriors will take on Anglesea, and you could imagine Modewarre will want to put the foot down early.

Best

Queenscliff: C. Whitley, L. Kidd, C. Durran, A. Hogan, D. Gibbs, I. McCabe

Modewarre: T. Hornsey, C. Joseph, J. Finch, O. Butler, J. Beardsell, T. Anderson

Final Score

Queenscliff: 10.14 (74)

Modewarre: 18.14 (22)

BFL Wash Up Round 11

Barwon Heads vs Anglesea

The Seagulls are still flying high with Nathan Brown proving to be unstoppable kicking seven goals for Barwon Heads. The Seagulls hit Anglesea hard early, and the Kangaroos couldn’t find their way back into the match.

Anglesea has had some tough opposition in recent weeks, coming off losses to some serious contenders for the flag. Ocean Grove is their next stop, and the Kangaroos will be eager to regain some momentum for the rest of the season. The Seagulls on the other hand, will have a test against Torquay.

Anglesea: 12.6 (78)

Drysdale vs Queenscliff

The contribution around the ground from Drysdale is the reason they are playing so dominantly. They come out from the opening bounce with pace, and their opposition struggles to play the game of ‘catch me if you can’.

Queenscliff lies just outside the top five, with finals approaching they will need to tackle some contenders if they are to make it to the big dance. Defeating Modewarre this weekend would be the perfect start. It would be even more perfect for them if Drysdale defeats Geelong Amateur.

Best

Drysdale: B. Fennell, M. Clark, J. Preece, J. Breust, T. Ruggles, N. Egan

Queenscliff: A. Davie, B. Anwyl, J. Maher, I. McCabe, R. Martin, Z. Henderson

Goals

Final Score

Drysdale: 18.21 (129)

Queenscliff: 7.10 (52)

Modewarre vs Geelong Amateur

Modewarre are starting to click at the right time. Tom Hornsey proved to be the difference last week with five goals to finish his day. Geelong Amateur takes a back step, and are now in danger of being knocked out of the top five.

It will take a determination, hard work, and sheer will, for the Ammos if they are a chance against Drysdale. The Warriors will face another contender for the top five in Queenscliff. The next seven rounds have turned into a race.

Best

Modewarre: M. Fenton, Z. May, M. Kasparian, J. Finch, T. Hornsey, C. Joseph

Geelong Amateur: M. Thacker, N. Kelly, S. Darley, E. Farley, S. Hosking, M. Hungerford

Final Score

Modewarre: 20.8 (128)

Geelong Amateur: 11.6 (72)

Torquay vs Portarlington

Torquay have responded to every question that critics ask of a real finalist team save one loss. Now it’s time for Barwon Heads to answer the question this weekend. Can the Seagulls knock off one of the BFL titans before finals and prove they are a chance for the flag?

The Tigers are only ahead by one win on the ladder from the Seagulls, and if the Tigers were to lose, it wouldn’t affect their second spot. This is all about early bragging rights. The Tigers were the Seagulls better in their last encounter. Let’s see if Barwon Heads has learned something from that defeat.

Portarlington will face Newcomb at PlasterCom Oval.

Best

Torquay: Mackenzie Burns, Sam Caruso, Callum Currie, Sheldon Ham, Charlie Johnson, Max Hurley

Portarlington: M. Farrell, T. Benham, N. Woodhams, I. Holroyd, J. Cummins, N. Cini

Goals

Torquay: 9 C. Currie, 5 C. Johnson, 4 S. Ham, 3 C. Heard, 3 C. Page, 3 Private Player, 2 C. Loftus, 2 J. Cooper, 2 T. Burke, M. Croxford, T. Diamond, M. Hurley

Portarlington: Lachlan Hart

Final Score

Torquay: 36.24 (240)

Portarlington: 1.3 (9)

Newcomb vs Ocean Grove

As to be expected, a very tight contest. Newcomb got the better of Ocean Grove in the third term but failed to hold off the Grubbers in the fourth. Power is definitely showing more effort in the past few weeks despite their current streak of losses.

That streak is likely to end when they face the Demons this weekend. The Grubbers will meet Anglesea at Ray Menzies Oval. The Kangaroos are in a bit of a rut lately with Ocean Grove looking like the early favourites this weekend.

Best

Newcomb: J. Duke, M. Andrews, R. Hollins, J. Scott, T. Courtney

Ocean Grove: K. Annand, R. Hobbs, T. Chalkley, F. Keck, H. Pearce, J. McHenr
