GFNL Netball final 5 - How will it finish?

23 August 2023

This weekend, the final round of the 2023 Geelong Football Netball League season takes place. In the A Grade division of netball, the final five teams that will advance to finals are already set, however their standings on the ladder could change depending on the results on the weekend.

Here are some of the possibilities that could occur:

LEOPOLD vs NEWTOWN & CHILWELL

If Leopold win:
-They would finish their season on a high note. The highest they could finish is seventh, provided Bell Park defeat St Mary’s, and the lowest they could finish is eighth.
-They would snuff out any chance Newtown & Chilwell had of finishing the season in top spot (Newtown & Chilwell would need to beat Leopold and would also need South Barwon to beat Colac).

If Newtown & Chilwell win:
-They would finish the season on top of the ladder if Colac lost to South Barwon. If Colac beat South Barwon, they would finish second. Regardless of the result in their game against Leopold, they cannot drop lower than second.
-If they finish first, they will have next week off and then play in the second qualifying final, and if they finish second, they will play either St Joseph’s, Geelong West, or South Barwon in the first qualifying final.

GEELONG WEST vs ST JOSEPH’S

If Geelong West win:
-They would overtake St Joseph’s on the ladder and take third spot. They would only be at threat of losing third spot if South Barwon beat Colac comprehensively.
-The highest they could finish is third, meaning they would play either Newtown & Chilwell or Colac next week in the first qualifying final. The lowest they could finish is fourth, meaning they would play St Joseph’s once again in an elimination final.

If St Joseph’s win:
-They would secure third spot going into finals, meaning they would play in the first qualifying final next week against either Colac or Newtown & Chilwell. They can’t finish higher than third.

SOUTH BARWON vs COLAC

If South Barwon win:
-They would put Colac’s place atop the ladder at jeopardy if Newtown & Chilwell beats Leopold.
-If they beat Colac comprehensively and Geelong West defeated St Joseph’s, they would be a chance to finish third.
-Third is the highest they could possibly finish, meaning they would play Newtown & Chilwell or Colac in next week’s qualifying final. The lowest they could finish is fourth, and in that situation, they would face off against either St Joseph’s or Geelong West in an elimination final.

If Colac win:
-They would be unable to concede top spot due to their percentage.
-Win or lose, they cannot drop out of the top two. They would play in either the first qualifying final next week against St Joseph’s, Geelong West, or South Barwon, or in the second qualifying final the week after.
