Six teams, Five spots

The final round of the 2023 Blood Toyota GFNL season is shaping up to be an intriguing weekend of football, as six teams remain in the hunt for the five spots in finals.

Though a couple of teams are a certainty to play in the finals, the league standings could drastically transform over the course of weekend depending on some results.

These are some of the possibilities that could eventuate.

SOUTH BARWON vs COLAC

If South Barwon win:
-They are in the finals.
-They will have denied Colac their chance at top spot, provided St Mary’s do not lose to Bell Park by 100+ points.
- All results and possibilities considered, the highest they could finish is third spot and the lowest they could finish is fourth spot, so in the first week of finals they would play either Colac or St Mary’s in a qualifying final or Leopold, Newtown & Chilwell, or St Joseph’s in an elimination final.

If Colac win
-They would remain in the hunt for top spot, provided they win by a great amount and St Mary’s are considerably beaten by Bell Park or do not beat Bell Park by much.
-If they were to beat South Barwon by a sizeable margin, they would put South Barwon at a very slight risk of missing the finals if St Joseph’s were to beat Geelong West by 100+ points and Newtown & Chilwell beat Leopold by 100+ points .
-They cannot drop out of the top two no matter the result, so their worst case would be playing either Leopold, Newtown & Chilwell or South Barwon again in a qualifier in week one of the finals, and their best case would be a week off and then playing the winner of the first qualifying final for a place in the Grand Final.

LEOPOLD vs NEWTOWN & CHILWELL

If Leopold win:
-They would lock in finals.
-They could finish as high as third if South Barwon lose to Colac.
-The lowest they can finish is fourth, meaning they would most likely play Newtown & Chilwell next Saturday in an elimination final.

If Newtown & Chilwell win:
-They would be in finals.
-If they were to beat Leopold by 100+ points, that would put Leopold at a minor risk of missing finals if St Joseph’s were to beat Geelong West by 100+ points.
-They could finish third if South Barwon loses to or does not beat Colac by a large amount. If South Barwon were to beat Colac convincingly, Newtown & Chilwell could end up finishing fourth and, in that case, would very likely play Leopold next week in a sudden-death final.

BELL PARK vs ST MARY’S

If Bell Park win:
-They would end their season on a high having knocked off one of the competition’s stronger outfits.
-The highest they could finish is seventh, dependent on Geelong West losing to St Joseph’s.

If St Mary’s win:
-They would all but lock away top spot if Colac loses to South Barwon. If they were to beat Bell Park by a large sum, their percentage and position will be unassailable. However, if Colac beats South Barwon comprehensively and St Mary’s do not beat Bell Park by a large sum, then the minor premiership could be up for grabs.
-They cannot drop out of the top two, so if they finish first, they would have a week off and then play in the second qualifying final for a Grand Final spot, and if they finish second they would play Leopold, Newtown & Chilwell, or South Barwon in the first qualifying final.

GEELONG WEST vs ST JOSEPH’S

If Geelong West win:
-They would end St Joseph’s season.
-They would finish their season seventh on the ladder even if Bell Park were to beat St Mary’s.

If St Joseph’s win:
-Their season would still be alive.
-To make the finals, they would need to beat Geelong West by 100+ points and they would also need Newtown & Chilwell to beat Leopold by a similar amount.
-If they did manage to make finals, they would most likely play either Newtown & Chilwell or South Barwon in an elimination final.

GFNL Netball final 5 - How will it finish?

This weekend, the final round of the 2023 Geelong Football Netball League season takes place. In the A Grade division of netball, the final five teams that will advance to finals are already set, however their standings on the ladder could change depending on the results on the weekend.

Here are some of the possibilities that could occur:

LEOPOLD vs NEWTOWN & CHILWELL

If Leopold win:
-They would finish their season on a high note. The highest they could finish is seventh, provided Bell Park defeat St Mary’s, and the lowest they could finish is eighth.
-They would snuff out any chance Newtown & Chilwell had of finishing the season in top spot (Newtown & Chilwell would need to beat Leopold and would also need South Barwon to beat Colac).

If Newtown & Chilwell win:
-They would finish the season on top of the ladder if Colac lost to South Barwon. If Colac beat South Barwon, they would finish second. Regardless of the result in their game against Leopold, they cannot drop lower than second.
-If they finish first, they will have next week off and then play in the second qualifying final, and if they finish second, they will play either St Joseph’s, Geelong West, or South Barwon in the first qualifying final.

GEELONG WEST vs ST JOSEPH’S

If Geelong West win:
-They would overtake St Joseph’s on the ladder and take third spot. They would only be at threat of losing third spot if South Barwon beat Colac comprehensively.
-The highest they could finish is third, meaning they would play either Newtown & Chilwell or Colac next week in the first qualifying final. The lowest they could finish is fourth, meaning they would play St Joseph’s once again in an elimination final.

If St Joseph’s win:
-They would secure third spot going into finals, meaning they would play in the first qualifying final next week against either Colac or Newtown & Chilwell. They can’t finish higher than third.

SOUTH BARWON vs COLAC

If South Barwon win:
-They would put Colac’s place atop the ladder at jeopardy if Newtown & Chilwell beats Leopold.
-If they beat Colac comprehensively and Geelong West defeated St Joseph’s, they would be a chance to finish third.
-Third is the highest they could possibly finish, meaning they would play Newtown & Chilwell or Colac in next week’s qualifying final. The lowest they could finish is fourth, and in that situation, they would face off against either St Joseph’s or Geelong West in an elimination final.

If Colac win:
-They would be unable to concede top spot due to their percentage.
-Win or lose, they cannot drop out of the top two. They would play in either the first qualifying final next week against St Joseph’s, Geelong West, or South Barwon, or in the second qualifying final the week after.

Kempe: A 21-Year Commitment to supporting community sport within the Barwon region

As we approach this weekend's Read the Play round, it's the perfect time to shine a well-deserved spotlight on one of AFL Barwon's remarkable partners – Kempe. This year marks an impressive 21-year partnership between Kempe and AFL Barwon.

Edward Wilson, the General Manager of AFL Barwon, highlights the tremendous impact of Kempe's partnership on the Barwon community.

"For 21 years, the Barwon community has greatly benefited from the immense partnership that Kempe has delivered in supporting community sport. 21 years later in 2023, AFL Barwon is extremely grateful for the continued partnership with Kempe and acknowledges the valuable contribution this partnership continues to contribute to the local community," he said.

Kempe's role within the AFL Barwon community has absolutely been instrumental, and their collaboration with Read the Play is a shining example of their dedication. Proudly serving as the founding partner of the charity from its very creation 17 years ago.

Read the Play is a unique program that cleverly leverages young people's engagement with sports and their connection to their local clubs to deliver crucial messages about mental health. It equips them with the knowledge and skills to seek help when needed, empowering the next generation of athletes to take control of their mental health and well-being.

Mental health in sports is a critical aspect of overall well-being for young athletes. The pressures of competition, performance expectations, and the spotlight can take a toll on their mental health. By fostering a culture where mental well-being is prioritised and openly discussed, Kempe and Read the Play are helping to break down stigmas surrounding mental health within the community.

In the celebration of more than two decades of partnership between Kempe and AFL Barwon, we extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Kempe for their continuous support. Together with Read the Play their commitment to empowering youth mental health and supporting our local sports has and will continue to make a lasting impact on the community.
