The TAC Club Rewards Program gives Victorian grassroots Football and Netball Clubs the opportunity to earn a share of $600,000 in funding, by participating in their mission; to eliminate deaths and serious injuries on our roads.
With road safety round this week, AFL Barwon is looking back at one of the local AFL Barwon Clubs that received funding from the program in 2022 and 2023.
Drysdale Football Netball Club will be submitting an application to the program again this year with the aim to ‘play their role’ as a Community Club, to keep encouraging safe driving on our roads.
The 2024 TAC Club Rewards Program focuses on the key issue of speeding. Around 236 Victorians are killed on the road each year, with excessive or inappropriate speed a contributing factor in many crashes.
Kerry Bell from Drysdale FNC highlighted the importance of road safety to them as a community, and the reasoning behind their ongoing support for the initiative. “We’ve got a lot of members impacted by road trauma. And it is important that we stop players, coaches, and officials from rushing to and from training and games.”
In March 2010, the club lost one of their junior members, 19-year-old Luke Robinson in a tragic car accident on Anakie Road. Bell described Luke as “Very responsible, he would always offer his teammates lifts home, it was just very unfortunate. His story shows how things can change in a moment, but the really impactful part is the ripple effect not just on the individual but on their families, friends, and their clubs as a whole.”
The tragic Luke Robinson example is just one of Drysdale FNC’s stories that fuels their passion for the cause and highlights this year’s focusses of speeding and cautious driving on all roads.
In previous years, Drysdale FNC has put the funding they have received towards two key issues which are of great importance to their club.
The funding from the 2022 successful application allowed them to launch their “community inclusive” junior umpire academy, providing opportunities for local youth to learn about and experience umpiring “In a fully supported environment.” The funding provided the participants with brand new whistles, uniforms, and even the opportunity to be paid to take part in the program.
In 2023, the focus for the club turned to mental health and wellbeing in their community and ensuring that their members are looked after. The grant provided funding for new wellbeing support and tools. Drysdale FNC worked with Mindful Aus, who provide guest speakers and workshops all around the country, centred around youth mental health and empowerment. “The benefits have been amazing; we really want to continue doing these things for our youth” Kerrie expressed.
The club’s key messaging to their junior members around road safety, is based on three common causes of road accidents: Distracted driving, drink driving, and speeding. For the last few years, the club has made it compulsory for youth ages to attend all education sessions on road safety. Their outlook being “Even if it saves one 18-year-old, it's worth it.”
This year, if successful, the club would love to put the money towards a new digital database which players and club staff can use to log and track player’s injuries. A job which the club has previously been doing on paper, Kerrie described database as a way to ease the burden on club trainers and team managers by allowing them to log, follow up and track the history and progress of a player’s injury.
Heading into TAC Road Safety Round, Drysdale FNC has invited all of its Club’s Life Members to attend and be involved with the club’s key messaging around safe driving. “The messaging is to jump onboard, and get behind the cause, tell us your stories, they are very on board with it.”

Women’s Senior Division 1
Qualifying Finals: Geelong Amateur vs St Mary's
It was a dominant display by Geelong Amateur last weekend. They were on top from the start and gave St Mary’s absolutely no freedom to play their game. Danielle Gaylard was outstanding for Geelong Amateur as was Analea McKee. McKee was the tip of the spear up forward for Ammos finishing with four goals. Ella Firth was named the best for St Mary’s.
Geelong Amateur now move to the Grand Final while St Mary’s has a date with Grovedale in the Preliminary Finals. The Saints have won their past two encounters with the Tigers. Last time it was St Mary’s by 11 points. The match will be held at McDonald Reserve this Sunday.

Final Score
Geelong Amateur: 7.8 (50)
St Mary’s: 1.1 (7)
Elimination Finals: Newtown & Chilwell vs Grovedale
This game was very close. But what gave Grovedale the victory, was their ability to convert. The Tigers also had four individual goal scorers to Newtown & Chilwell’s two. Emily Kenshole was the leading goal kicker on the ground with a pair of majors for Newtown & Chilwell, while Chloe Adams and newly crowned Division 1 Best & Fairest winner Alana Tully, were among the best for Grovedale.
Unfortunately, this is the end of the road for the Eagles after finishing third on the ladder to finish their Home & Away season. For Grovedale, it’s off to McDonald Reserve to face St Mary’s. As stated before, the Tigers haven’t been able to defeat St Mary’s all year, but this is Finals, and anything can happen on the day.

Women’s Senior Division 2
Elimination Finals: St Mary’s vs Torquay
Talk about an upset. St Mary’s have defeated Torquay twice this season but in Finals the past means naught. The Saints were in control for three terms, but due to sheer willpower, the Tigers got back in the game and pinched victory in the final term. Jaimie Castledine and Grace O'Kane each finished with two goals for their respective teams while Vanessa Rischitelli was named Best on Ground for Torquay.
Early in the season, Torquay and Drysdale have had some nailbiters. Drysdale got the chocolates in Round 1, but Grovedale snatched victory from the Hawks in Round 5. The Last time they met, however, Drysdale were dominant. This should be a tight contest with the winner going on to meet St Joseph’s at the big dance.
Best
St Mary’s: L. McDonald, B. Gaylor, V. Nihill, S. Everitt, E. Host, H. Stansfield
Torquay: V. Rischitelli, B. Angell, K. Ryan, S. O'Meara, K. Doonan, G. O'Kane
Goals
St Mary’s: 2 J. Castledine, C. Elsworth, M. Sherman

Final Score
St Mary’s: 4.3 (27)
Torquay: 5.3 (33)
Qualifying Finals: St Joseph’s vs Drysdale
After a slow start, St Joseph’s jumped Drysdale in the second term and continued their dominance until the final siren. Charlotte Simpson had a day out for Joey’s while Jane Burch and Emmalyn Nekrep combined to score four majors. Jessie Morrow played a good game on a tough day for Drysdale.
The Hawks now have a chance at redemption heading into the Preliminary Finals this weekend. Their output in the last match against Grovedale was superb, but Grovedale will be no easy target. The Hawks will have to fight for four quarters if they want to make the Grand Final.

Women’s Senior Division 3
Qualifying Finals: Anglesea vs South Barwon
Like most of the ladder leaders throughout the Women’s Senior Divisions, Anglesea was victorious. But not by much. They almost lost the game due to pure inaccuracy despite owning the ball. With 15 scoring shots, they only converted two. South Barwon just fell away by four points. Division 3 Best & Fairest winner Maggie Caudullo, was named the best for the Swans with two majors.
Anglesea has punched in their Grand Final ticket as South Barwon prepares to face a defiant North Geelong outfit. The Swans have had a healthy record over the Magpies, but in their last match, South Barwon only won by three points. Beware the Magpies!
Best

Final Score

South Barwon: 3.3 (21)
Elimination Finals: Lara vs North Geelong
A quick start by North Geelong saw Lara fight back in the second term. The third quarter turned into a tug of war, but in the final act, North Geelong put the foot on the accelerator to claim a convincing win. Division 3 Best & Fairest Runner Up Faith Qoon, was named among the best for North Geelong with Kaitlyn Bonney & Cecilia Lowrey, scoring two snags apiece. The best for Lara was Kara Stacey.
Lara's journey has come to an end, but North Geelong have an upcoming fight on their hands. South Barwon will be eager to make amends after losing a tight game to Anglesea. But the Magpies are every chance to win this game and make the Grand Final. It’s a big fight before the main event this Sunday at McDonald Reserve.

Division 1
Preliminary Finals: St Mary’s vs Grovedale
St Mary’s were looking for redemption after their first match of the Finals and they found it last Sunday. A quick two-goal start had the Saints get on top of Grovedale early. The Tigers managed to kick their first major of the day in the second term to go into halftime only nine points down. But the second half saw a dominant display by St Mary’s with Grovedale having no answers. The charge was led by the influence of midfielders Millie Johnson and Ella Firth for Saints. Defender Olivia Kyatt was named the best for Grovedale.
Now it’s off to the big dance for St Mary’s. In the Qualifying Finals, Geelong Amateur were in a league of their own. Ammos have awesome firepower up forward in Analea McKee and Cheryl de Groot. They also have the Division 1 joint runner-up for the Best & Fairest winner Danielle Gaylard in the ruck. But St Mary’s have some weapons of their own. Brooke Mallia has been in good form of late in the ruck and Danielle Stewart is a jet in the midfield. Add other joint runner-up for the Best & Fairest Tahley Houghton to the mix, and St Mary's looks dangerous.
St Mary’s has beaten Geelong Amateur two times in a row early this season, but Ammos have won their last three encounters. This one looks set for a very entertaining battle.
Best

Division 2
Preliminary Finals: Drysdale vs Torquay
After a slow first quarter, the Tigers ran rampant for the rest of the match. Kate Doonan’s run on the outside had her named the best for Torquay. Grace O’Kanee and Sophie O’Meara scored two snags apiece with several other Tigers contributing to the scoreboard. Division 2 Best & Fairest winner Tara Smith, was named the best for Drysdale.
This Sunday the real fight begins. St Joseph's and Torquay have met twice this year for one win each over the other. Joeys forward Jane Burch has kicked 16 goals for the season with Emmalyn Nekrep behind her with 14. Nekrep has genuine speed. Keeley Hardingham is a tower in the ruck and has pushed forward many times this season to claim nine goals.
Torquay doesn’t necessarily have that kind of power up forward like St Joseph’s. What they do have, is great midfield. Sophie O'Meara & Kate Ryan are genuine ball winners with Vanessa Rischitelli providing them with plenty of ball in the ruck.
Another game of strong tactics will determine who can get the better of whom, but we won’t find the answer until the final siren this weekend.
Best
Drysdale: T. Smith, T.Benson, J. Morrow, L. Foote, C. Edmanson, M. Egan

Final Score
Drysdale: 2.6 (18)
Torquay: 8.9 (57)
Division 3
Preliminary Finals: South Barwon vs North Geelong
South Barwon were out to make a point and they were hungry. Chloe Cox was causing all kinds of headaches up forward for the North Geelong defence. Cox finished her day kicking seven goals for the Swans. Ayesha Nicholson was named the best for South Barwon with her dominant rebound off halfback. Faith Qoon was named once again in the best for North Geelong.
South Barwon are now off to meet Anglesea on Sunday in the Grand Final. If they can bring that same fight and free up Cox in the forward line, they are more than a chance. Last time Anglesea dominated the scoring count but couldn’t convert most of their chances.
If Division 3 Best & Fairest winner Maggie Caudullo and her midfield group can get on top of Anglesea in the centre of the ground, that will make the difference. That being said, Lahnee Firth and Phoebe Lingam are no pushovers. This one might be even closer than the last encounter.
Best
South Barwon: A. Nicholson, C. Cox, D. Wilson, G. Pickard, A. Muir, M. Puckett
North Geelong: F. Qoon, J. Coleman, C. Lowrey, T. Drever, A. Wilkes, M. Rentsch
Goals
South Barwon: 7 C. Cox, M. Caudullo, A. Muir

Final Score
South Barwon: 9.9 (63)
